Feel at home in our city with the civic integration programme

Getting to know a new country and culture isn’t always easy. Atlas thinks it’s important that you feel good in Antwerp. The civic integration programme is the first step towards living an independent and active life in Antwerp.

  • You will take a course about life in Belgium in your own language or a language you speak well.
  • Atlas will work with you to find the right Dutch language course.
  • Looking for work or training? Atlas will guide you towards the right organisations. 
  • You will meet new people and engage in social activities.

  • You will receive individual counselling and information in your own language or a language you speak well.


How much does the civic integration programme cost?

How much you have to pay depends on your programme. Exemptions from payment are possible. An Atlas staff member will discuss your personal situation. 


Who can join the civic integration programme?

  • Are you aged 18 or over?
  • Are you new in Belgium or have you already been living in Belgium for a while?
  • Are you officially registered in the city of Antwerp?

If your answer to the previous questions is 3 times a 'yes', you can take part in the civic integration programme.

Are you a citizen of the European Union?

You can attend the civic integration programme.

Are you not a citizen of the European Union?

You must attend the civic integration programme.
You do not attend the civic integration programme? You pay a fine.

What do you do in order to be officially registered in the city of Antwerp?

Complete this form. A staff member of the Migration Office (Loket Migratie) will contact you for an appointment.
Is your registration in order? You can attend the civic integration programme.


Have you successfully completed the civic integration programme?

You will receive a civic integration certificate. This certificate has many advantages:

  • Do you want to apply for Belgian nationality? This certificate can be important proof when obtaining Belgian citizenship later on.
  • You will pay less for Dutch language courses at language level B1.
  • The certificate shows what you have learned.
  • The certificate shows which goals you have reached.

Are you obliged to follow the civic integration programme? Then you also have to achieve language level B1 orally (B1 mondeling), up to a maximum of 2 years after the date of  your civic integration certificate.
